Resumo: The debate about processes that may lead to early sports specialization remains current, whether through the choice of teaching approaches or the exclusive practice of a single sport. The aim of this work was to analyze the stage considered ideal by coaches for practitioners to dedicate themselves exclusively to handball. Seventeen coaches were interviewed, and their statements were analyzed using the reflexive thematic analysis method. The results showed a preference for the exclusive practice of handball until the age of 12, which may approach a scenario of early specialization. This stance diverges significantly from the consulted literature and contradicts the generalist training foundation that supports the stages of training.

El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar la etapa considerada ideal por los entrenadores para que los practicantes se dediquen exclusivamente al balonmano. Se entrevistaron a 17 entrenadores y sus discursos fueron analizados mediante el método de análisis temático reflexivo. Los resultados mostraron una preferencia por la práctica exclusiva del balonmano hasta los 12 años de edad, lo que puede acercarse a un escenario de especialización temprana. Esta postura diverge significativamente de la bibliografía consultada y va en contra de la formación generalista que sustenta las etapas del entrenamiento.O debate sobre processos que podem levar à especialização esportiva precoce segue em voga, seja por meio da escolha de métodos de ensino ou pela prática exclusiva de apenas uma modalidade. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a etapa considerada ideal por treinadores para que os praticantes se dediquem exclusivamente ao handebol. Foram entrevistados 17 treinadores, cujos discursos foram analisados pelo método da análise temática reflexiva. Os resultados mostraram um apelo à prática exclusiva do handebol até os 12 anos de idade, o que pode se aproximar de um cenário de especialização precoce.
