Summary: The Extension has historically stood out as the academic pillar through which various social practices have been carried out. In this context, we witness the existence of an extension perspective oriented based on the Freirian concept of Popular Education. In view of the above, the present manuscript aimed to outline, from a historical diachronic approach, the process of constituting the Extension field in Popular Education, in the Brazilian context. For this, a descriptive bibliographic search was used, with a qualitative approach, based on the narrative review. It is observed that, at first, these Popular Education Extension initiatives were developed in a way unrelated to the university as a institution. With the beginning of the military dictatorship period, in 1964, these practices began to be severely repressed, even so, they continued to occur again. With the end of the military regime in 1985 and political openness, these practices started to be recognized institutionally. In a row, with the consolidation of some government policies, these experiences were enjoying institutional credibility and gaining more and more prominence and recognition. Although it is not a hegemonic practice, it has gradually been conquering space in the multifaceted university scenario and consolidating itself as a possibility.

En este contexto, somos testigos de la existencia de una perspectiva de extensión orientada en base al concepto freiriano de educación popular. En vista de lo anterior, el presente manuscrito tuvo como objetivo esbozar, desde un enfoque diacrónico, el proceso de constituir el campo de Extensión en Educación Popular, en el contexto brasileño. Metodologicamente, se utilizó una búsqueda bibliográfica descriptiva, con un enfoque cualitativo, basado en la revisión narrativa. Se observa que, al principio, estas iniciativas de Extensión en Educación Popular se desarrollaron de una manera no relacionada con la universidad como institución. Con el comienzo del período de la dictadura militar, en 1964, estas prácticas comenzaron a ser severamente reprimidas, aun así, continuaron ocurriendo. Con el final del régimen militar en 1985 y la apertura política, estas prácticas comenzaron a ser reconocidas institucionalmente. Con la consolidación de algunas políticas gubernamentales, estas experiencias gozaron de credibilidad institucional y ganaron cada vez más importancia y reconocimiento. Aunque no es una práctica hegemónica, gradualmente ha ido conquistando espacio en el escenario universitario multifacético y consolidándose como una posibilidad concreta.A dimensão da Extensão tem-se destacado historicamente como o pilar acadêmico por onde variadas práticas sociais estão sendo realizadas. Nesse contexto, presencia-se a existência de uma perspectiva de Extensão orientada com base na concepção freiriana de Educação Popular. Diante do exposto, o presente manuscrito objetiva delinear a partir de uma abordagem histórica diacrônica, o processo de constituição do campo da Extensão em Educação Popular, no contexto brasileiro. Para tanto, recorreu-se a uma pesquisa bibliográfica do tipo descritiva, com abordagem qualitativa, apoiando-se na modalidade da revisão narrativa. Observa-se que, a princípio, essas iniciativas de Extensão em Educação Popular foram desenvolvendo-se de forma desvinculada da universidade como instituição social. Com o início do período da ditatura militar, em 1964, essas práticas começaram a ser duramente reprimidas, ainda assim, continuaram a ocorrer reconditamente. Com o fim do regime militar, em 1985, e a abertura política, essas práticas passaram a ser reconhecidas institucionalmente. Em consecutivo, com a consolidação de algumas políticas governamentais, essas experiências foram desfrutando de credibilidade institucional e ganhando cada vez mais destaque e reconhecimento.
