Summary: | Thispaper discussses the iconicity and arbitrariness of sign language in Peirceanperspective. In this study, the semiotic concepts of Peirce (2005) areconsidered discussing the signification process and the difference betweenlanguage and speech. Then, the structural pathways of sign language areexplored, and classified as iconic and arbitrary. As results of discussion, itis considered that sign language just can be classified as iconic to someonewho not knows sign language, because for those who know, prevails conventionrecognition. Furthermore, there are classifiers, that are not conventionalizedsigns, and threfore are closer definition o Peirce’s definition of a icon, although having previous determined hands configuration. |
