New perspectives in the reconstruction of the way of life of the shell mound builders: a multidisciplinary approach

Summary: The assemblage of original data and literature reviews in a mostly new multidisciplinary approach in Brazilian archaeology provided a base for the better understanding of the shell mound builder society. Anthracological analysis allowed palaeoecological reconstruction of the coastal environment and provided information about firewood economy and diet in this society. Palaeopathological analyses revealed important aspects of the lifestyle of shell mound builders and their relationship with the environment. The combination of results of these two disciplines, associated to lithic analyses, pointed to economic and subsistence spectra way larger than considered so far, confirmed the importance of plants to this society, and supplied more solid bases to the debate concerning management and plant cultivation.

Los análisis antracológicos permitieron la reconstrucción paleoecológica del medio costero, además de proporcionar información sobre la economía de combustible en esta sociedad y su dieta. Los análisis paleopatológicos revelaron aspectos importantes sobre el modo de vida de los sambaquieiros y su relación con el medio ambiente. La combinación de los resultados de estas dos materias con los análisis líticos apuntó a un espectro económico y de subsistencia mucho más amplio de lo que se suponía anteriormente, confirmó la importancia de las plantas para esta sociedad y proporcionó bases más sólidas para el debate sobre el manejo y cultivo de las plantas.A reunião de dados originais e de revisões da literatura, numa abordagem multidisciplinar praticamente inédita na arqueologia brasileira, forneceu subsídios para um melhor conhecimento da sociedade sambaquieira. Análises antracológicas permitiram a reconstrução paleoecológica do ambiente costeiro, além de prover informações sobre a economia do combustível nesta sociedade e sua dieta. Análises paleopatológicas revelaram aspectos importantes do modo de vida dos sambaquieiros e de sua relação com o meio ambiente.
