De facto, a infeção por este vírus tem um papel importante na formação de cancro, nomeadamente através das proteínas virais E7 e E6. Assim, elaborou-se esta revisão por forma a compreender os mecanismos que levam à carcinogénese dos carcinomas orofaríngeos através da infeção por HPV, bem como entender qual a relevância deste vírus para o prognóstico e terapêutica dos mesmos. O prognóstico dos doentes com carcinoma orofaríngeo HPV-16 positivo revelou-se melhor relativamente ao dos restantes doentes, o que é consistente com a hipótese de os tumores HPV-positivos e HPV-negativos serem distintos e terem diferentes causas, perfis de fatores de risco e survival outcomes. Tem existido um grande esforço para a pesquisa de ferramentas que permitam utilizar a patogénese deste subgrupo de tumores para uma diminuição da mortalidade destes doentes, nomeadamente através de vacinas terapêuticas que tenham como alvo as estirpes de HPV responsáveis por esta patologia.Human papillomavirus (HPV) is related to various cancers, the most relevant being cervical cancer and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. In fact, this virus’ infection has an important role for the formation of cancer, namely through the viral proteins E7 and E6. Therefore, an article review was carried out in order to understand the mechanisms that lead to the carcinogenesis of the oropharyngeal carcinomas through the HPV infection, as well as to understand what the relevance of this virus is to the prognosis and therapeutic of this pathology. The prognosis of the patients with HPV-16 positive oropharyngeal carcinoma was found to be superior when compared to the patients with HPV-16 negative oropharyngeal carcinoma, which is consistent with the hypothesis that the HPV-positive and HPV-negative tumors are distinct and have different causes, risk factor profiles and survival outcomes.
