Resumo: The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of life of patients with differents dentofacial deformities submitted to orthognathic surgery. Forty six patients were evaluated about 6 months postoperatively and were divided into 2 groups. Group 1 represented those who had sagital problems, and group 2 represented patients with vertical problems. All subjects were assessed by the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), the 22-item Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire OQLQ-22) and the 14-item Short Form Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14). Preoperatively between the 2 groups was significant difference in role pain and general health in SF-36 (P<0,05). Postoperatively the difference was not significant. In Preoperatively and postoperatively for male gender: group 1: OHIP was significant difference in role psychological discomfort (P<0,005) and in OQLQ in facial esthetics (P<0,05). Group 2: general health and mental health in SF-36 (P=0,01) and in esthetics in OQLQ (P=0,07). For female gender: in OHIP except for Functional limitation, all domains shown difference and in OQLQ all domains shown difference too and in the group 2, the SF-36 revealed significant difference in pain (P<0,05), in all domains in OQLQ and in domains relationship to psychological discomfort and disability, social disability and handicap. The orthognathic surgery had a positive impact on the quality of life of all patients evaluated. The female gender showed a better response as compared to male, as well as patients with vertical deformities showed a tendency to larger differences when compared to the sagittal deformities.
