Resumo: Objective: to compare the perception of quality of life of the elderly and their caregivers who receive assistance from home staff with those who do not receive this kind of assistance. Methods: 100 individuals over 60 years of age, all of whom were dependent on daily life activities, and their respective caregivers, were also selected. The Mental State Mini-Exam (MMSE) was used as an exclusion criterion. to detect elderly with severe cognitive deficit. The elderly were listed through the Itapetininga Elderly Support Programs and Itapetininga / S Basic Health Units. The CASE GROUP consisted of 50 elderly people and 50 caregivers who are assisted by a home care team and, in return, the CONTROL GROUP: constituted by 50 elderly people and 50 caregivers not assisted by any household staff. The subjects evaluated were: socio-demographic characteristics, health conditions, level of dependence for basic and instrumental activities of daily living (through the Katz Index and Lawton and Brody Scale), quality of life (through the Whoqol questionnaire) and perception of quality of home care received. Caregivers were also evaluated regarding socio-demographic characteristics, as well as professional characteristics, health conditions, musculoskeletal symptoms (Nordic questionnaire), quality of life (Whoqol questionnaire), and were also questioned about the quality of home care received. All participants were informed about the purposes of the study and signed the Informed Consent Term, after which the elderly were evaluated. Results: the majority of the elderly participants in the research are women, low income and low schooling. The results showed that there is an incidence of greater hospitalization for those who do not receive home care, in contrast, those who are seen have shown satisfaction. In relation to the caregivers, there is the supremacy of women between the ages of 40 and 50 years, without degree of kinship with the elderly, and without previous training to carry out such activity. Conclusion: both the elderly and the caregivers without home care have a poorer quality of life in all domains evaluated, compared to those assisted by the home team.
