Resumo: This work deals with the relationships among city, memory and modernization, but the notice from the food trade. The time frame is the 1970s, a period of important transformations in Brazilian society. In the case of Arcoverde the advent of modern equipment such as the supermarket has become part of everyday people, and normalization of urban space transformed habits and customs. In this sense, through the life stories of merchants and consumers who experienced the period, investigated the business practices developed at the open, public market and in many grocery stores that maintained a network of credit built on trust. The speeches of the supermarket ads are also part of our field of analysis. Personal collections, periodicals, and photographs provided a major historiographical sources for research development.
