Resumo: This study aims to analyze the implementation of Integrated Management of Solid Waste (GIRS) to the municipality of Sairé at the semiarid region of the State of Pernambuco, and its contribution to local development. Specifically, the study deals with identifying the social technologies, or processes, methods and strategies, adopted in implementing the steps in the management of solid waste, aimed at ensuring a healthy environment and improving the quality of life and promoting local development. The theoretical contribution of Social Technology was brought from authors such as: Dagnino, Brandão and Novaes; Lassance and Pedreira; Caccia Bava and, Fonseca and Serafim. The assessment of local development based on the author: Santos; Callou, Jara and Brandão, with the scenario of changing technologies and their consequences for the environment. Using a qualitative methodology, the study uses several technical options for collecting information such as documentary analysis and literature, interviews with semi-structured questions and field research. Found that, despite the GIRS be an effort of local development, the strategies used in the municipality of Sairé were kept away from the principles of participation and collective construction of knowledge. Through direct observation was seen that the GIRS at Sairé innovated the technique of operating the landfill and that some procedures were established for the operation of the Unit for Screening and Composting. The research also showed that the adopted strategy of Sairé did not included the Recyclable material pickers in the preparation of construction methods, and in techniques of implementing the management of solid waste, undermining the main feature of Social Technology. The results showed that the GIRS at Sairé is still in process of implantation.
