Resumo: The yam is part of the culture and tradition of the Brazilian Northeast as part of the local cuisine component. Although not among the export commodities, has great social and economic importance, generating jobs and gains. In this sense, Pernambuco is pointed out in northeastern Brazil as the largest producer and major consumer. However, there are few studies and efforts aimed at the cultivation of yams, especially in terms of co-ordination of the market. Facing this scenario, this study has the aim to characterize the yam productive chain and to understand how the governance of the main links of the production of yam is structured in the state of Pernambuco. And so in order to identify these points, a qualitative-exploratory research was accomplished by a study of case of the components of the chain in question based in productive chain and governance structure concepts. The survey was conducted in three cities, Bonito, Gravatá and Vicência, beyond Recife where are most organizations of the supply chain. Along the work, it was noticed that the chain is disorganized and there isn’t good coordination between the agents, negatively affecting the governance structure. Factors such as lack of an official classification system and standardization officer, has negative impact on quality of products offered. However the question of yam quality can be developed by the retailer segment, characterized as determinant in coordinating the supply chain, jointly with the exporter segment to improve the co-ordenation, therefore the governance structure of all chain. Implementing a system of classification and standardization by the wholesaler segment. As a joint action with the organizational environment and backed by the institutional environment at various levels. And with this, efforts aimed at improving the productive handling on producer segment, can bring benefits to the productive chain as a whole.
