The pursuit of increased productivity has substantially reduced the biodiversity of these genetic resources and the process of continuous genetic erosion is a major cause of erosion by replacing local breeds with improved and / or exotic varieties. The purpose of this literature review is to update and gather the most important information on the conservation status of local goat and sheep genetic resources in South America. In the pursuit of conservation of genetic resources to date, there is still a large gap between state of the art tools to characterize these features and their practical application.
