Resumo: This research aimed to analyze student participation through the student union. It sought to understand the organization of the student union and how this participation in the school is being built and how it has an impact on the students' lives beyond the school routine, as well as investigating the possible adult-centered practices that prevent students from participating in the school. It was assumed that the student union is a conquered and collective space and that it can build democratic practices between students and the school as well as with society in general. Based on the qualitative methodology, specifically not even a case study, the research was developed in a state public high school that is part of the semi-integral program in the countryside of Pernambuco. We carried out analyzes of the school documents relevant to the standardization, promotion and operation for the student union, as well as the PPP (Pedagogical Political Project) of the school institution, we held focus groups with the students who were part of the union in the period from 2018 to 2020. The data analysis was developed from the perspective of the content analysis methodology, making the students' speeches during the focus groups as the source of the categories presented in this work. The student union is configured as a space that can promote participatory experiences with students, thereby developing increasingly democratic practices. Bearing in mind that the student union is most of the time the students' first opportunity to participate in a democratic and collective space, with this it is an incentive, even if indirectly, to develop this participation actively. It is a space that we need to reaffirm your proposal and achievement at school. Although this participation is controlled mainly by the ideas of the Christian religion, which preaches that to be a good human being you need to develop solidarity and charity, practices that are found in our study. Strengthening the student union is promoting more and more democratic education.
