Resumo: Assuming that, nowadays, media exposure enhanced by online connections is a power in the ideological disputes that cross society that, consequently, condition the production of meaning and hegemonic relations, this work has as main objective to analyze the symbolic forms built in the reports on the “commemorations due” to the 55th anniversary of the military coup, proposed by the president – in office – Jair Messias Bolsonaro, in 2019, and how these sustain relations of power/domination in the construction of political- social through the media. Anchored in the precepts of Critical Discourse Analysis whose main assumption is a “reaction against the dominant formal paradigms” (DIJK, 2017, p. 114), mainly anchored in the studies of Thompson (1995) and Dijk (2012, 2017), we analyzed ten reports that convey the theme of "due celebrations", five from the Folha de S.Paulo newspaper (the one with the largest circulation in the country) and five from the Diario de Pernambuco newspaper (the largest in the state), in order to understand how the general modes of operation of ideology, that is, ideological strategies, are used by newspapers and how they function as a gear that sustains relations of media domination until they become an abuse of power. From the analysis, we show that the media works as a gear that not only builds but sustains relations of domination - given its power to attribute visibility to interests that can be convergent within the spheres of power, with our focus being, the Brazilian historical-political sphere. With this, we also show that historical facts that mark the population, such as the military dictatorship, must be discussed, analyzed and perceived not only in the scientific field, but in the social one, so that we can become, every day, not only researchers, but critical researchers who understand their role in the mission to repel the possibility of a non-evaluative science.
