Resumo: Psychology, as a science, seeks to comprehend the subject, its mental process, behavior and subjectivity. The understanding of how individuals realize themselves, their family, their career, the living and aging process becomes an element in the field of aging. This study aimed to reveal the perspectives, motivations and challenges perceived by managers in family businesses crosswise to the succession thematic. This is a qualitative research. The sample comprised six participants selected by convenience and subdivided into two groups: entrepreneurs who have successors and entrepreneurs who don t have successors. Schutze s (1977) narrative interview method was used for data collection. The data were analyzed by NVivo 10 application. The results indicate that there are differences in the way in which entrepreneurs with and without successor perceive the aging process. When second generation takes control of the business it usually transforms patriarch s duties in the company. The choice to move away from professional activities and pass the baton to the successor is related to health issues. Management problems interfere in subject s private life and prevent leisure time. It was found that for these individuals the living and aging processes are related to the maintenance of family ties. It is believed that this research might contribute to scholar in such areas as human and social sciences by offering elements of reflection to the psychology and management of family business fields
