Resumo: It is a transversal study, with 78 elderly people, both sexes, aging between 61 and 87 years old. The objective was to evaluate the Functional Health Literacy in elderly people who are hypertensive, diabetics and users of Family Health Strategy of Passo Fundo, RS, Brazil. Data collection, carried out from May to July 2014, had the subject eligibility from the MINI-COG results which included the clock drawing test and evaluation of visual and auditive functions. The data collection was carried out by applying socio demographic and health information test and also the application of S-TOFHLA. Data analyses were performed by using Pearson's chisquare test, with significance level of 5%. There was an arterial hypertension predominance and treatment of diseases for more than 10 years. Low school level and inadequate FHL were identified in 50% of the elderly people. The results showed association between low school level and inadequate FHL. These are presented in the form of a scientific paper as scientific production 1 of this dissertation. The scientific production 2, based on the reflection on the importance of the FHL for the elderly self-care in the face of chronic disease, presented as a book chapter
