Resumo: The research that resulted in this text aimed to develop an analysis of school holidays in Brazil, in various historical circumstances, in order to identify its various objectives and understand its importance to the Brazilian education in these various times through literature and in light of formulations of Critical Theory. This was a literature search through eleven academic papers that address the topic in focus in the 1890 period to 2009. We used the Critical Theory as a theoretical framework to orient our analysis. The results indicate that the school holidays in Brazil were at the beginning of mass schooling used as a political and ideological instrument that sought to strengthen and develop some aspects of order, progress and work, in order to propagate the republican ideals. Then the school holidays served to show the power of the state and ensure the stability of the ruling power, and over the years the parties were to changing the characteristics under new formats. In contemporary school holidays are transformed and shaped by the cultural industry, as a consumer product, although inexpensive, can only have some space in a non-place. For us, school parties are revealing to think the current school as a non-place.
