Resumo: The aim of this study was to determine how use of different roughages may influence the milk composition and productivity of Brazilian Girolando cows. Four dairy cattle farms situated in the rural area of the Brazilian State of Sao Paulo participated in the study, each of which uses a different type of roughage, either separately or combined: Mombasa Guinea grass (Panicum maximum), corn silage (Zea mays), cane sugar (Saccharum spp.) and sorghum silage (Sorghum vulgare Pers.). Milk samples taken from fifteen animals in lactation were collected monthly from each farm over a period of six months and submitted to laboratory analysis to ascertain their principle properties and somatic cell count. Bromatological and mineral analyses of samples of the roughages and water fed to the herds were also undertaken. Based on the results obtained, it was possible to ascertain that the roughage used significantly influenced several of the factors analyzed, in particular fat, protein and its fragments (casein and its respective percentage), total solids, defatted dry extract, ureic nitrogen level and productivity indexes. Variations in lactose levels and somatic cell count are related more to handling and hygiene conditions of the herd than to feeding and as such did not present significant variations as a result of the roughage feed in this study
