Resumo: | This research evaluated the performance of a system that combined anaerobic and aerobic processes, for the treatment of low strength sanitary sewage using a new configuration of anaerobic/aerobic baffled reactor, which operated under different hydraulic retention periods (HRP). The combination of the anaerobic/aerobic processes aimed to take the maximal advantages of each, minimizing the negative aspects, and the configuration through clambers aimed to built the system in small urban and rural areas. The baffled reactor was built using Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) and it was composed by four chambers (three anaerobics and one aerobic). In the aerobic chamber was added a bamboo ring layer, with constant air supply, provided by an air compressor and diffuser. The system's performance was evaluated under four different HRPs (33; 22; 16,5 and 8,25 hours for the complete system), divided in Phases. Regarding the organic matter average removal percentages, in terms of Chemical Oxygen Demand, the reactor reached a average removal of 77% and the highest removal percentage was obtained with a HRP of 22 hours (79%). The Biochemical Oxignen Demand average percentage was 70% and the Total Suspended Solids was 90%. The reactor in question showed operation stability, effective organic matter and optimal solids removal. Regarding the Nitrogen removal, the reactor did not reached the standards required by the Federal Legislation. However the low Nitrate and Nitrite concentrations occurred in the last phase of monitoring, which may infer the possibility of nitrogen removal, in the ammonia form, through desnitrification. This may be promising to Ammonia Nitrogen removal if an extra anaerobic chamber is installed, after the aerobic chamber. Regarding the microorganism community evaluated through molecular biology techniques (PCR and DGGE), it was observed a big diversity settlement of the Bacteria Domain communities, having the inoculum a considerable influence... |
