Resumo: This thesis studies the relationship between cities and regions. Realizing that in the present context the relationships are very dynamic and that they incorporate economic relationships in components of the spatial forms - sometimes in local situations, sometimes global situations - the thesis tries, to search inside the national characteristics, theoretical and methodological approaches which allow the identification of relationship, as well as possibilities of proportions in this context. To this end, the thesis was developed in three parts: the first one contextualizes the contemporaneous moment, trying to show, inside the process of economy globalization, those elements that affect the cities, the relationships between them and regional relations, both at international level as well as national and subnational levels. The second one, elaborated from theoretical basis, identified possibilities to approach the relationship between cities and regions, inside the current context seen from other eyes. In the third part, there was an analysis of four reference studies, produced to Brazil, in order to observe, from the elucidation of this theoretical and methodological orientation of looks proposed by the theoretical methodological basement mentioned before, their theoretical and methodological approaches and the relationships found by them for the Brazilian cities and regions.
