Resumo: This study, entitled The relation of conclusion in Portuguese: the Functions of Summary, Conclusion and Consequence, analyses the conclusive relation when performed by the traditionally denominated conjunctions então (so) and portanto (therefore) in spoken language data in Portuguese-speaking countries. To achieve this objective, this work uses Functional Discourse Grammar (FDG), from Hengeveld and Mackenzie, as a referential. The model focuses on the communicative intention of the speaker when using the linguistic system in situations of interaction. The corpora concerns data from the corpus denominated Oral Portuguese, which brings samples from Portuguese spoken in Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Sao Tome and Principe and East-Timor. The results show that there are different functions of conclusive relation: The Interactional Function Summary, The Rethorical Function Conclusion and the Semantic Function Consequence. The principal distinction among the subtypes is the implementation of them in different levels and layers, what clarifies the fluctuation on the definition of conclusion found in the linguistic bibliography. The study reveals that at times there is a more direct relation between the involved clauses, denominated Consequence, at other times the relation is more indirect, indicating an implicit premise, denominated Conclusion, and sometimes the relation happens between larger textual portions, to summarize a previous explanation, denominated Summary. It is possible to access that aspects of Formulation, in the Interpersonal Level, in the cases of the Functions of Summary and Conclusion, and in the Representational Level, in the case of the Relation of Consequence, are reflected in the levels of morphosyntactic and phonological codification
