Resumo: Education has been going through a crisis that presents conflicting situations which are difficult to solve and directly reach both students and teachers. Teachers do not know very well how to handle such situation and as a consequence they continue to base their classes in the oral transmission approach. The contemporary literature has shown the importance of overcome this panorama, emphasizing the positive status of the teaching-learning process. This study aims to investigate if the Elementary School teachers are aware of their professional practice concerning the pedagogical model and the teaching-learning process. We have also approached which is the role that teachers assigns to themselves in relation to the teaching-learning issues. The justification of this research is focused on understanding, based on an Piagetian assumptions and supported by specific authors, the models and teaching-learning concepts used by teachers without the perception of its importance. Our hypothesis is that the constitution of the professional teacher identity is directly bound to the traditional model of education and that the teachers are aware on this fact. The text seeks to understand the historical conditions in which the teaching profession was developed, their possible implications for being a teacher and the point of view considering the ancient, modern and contemporary contexts. In addition, this papaer deals with the processes of teaching and learning and with the Piaget's theory for understanding thereof. The methodological approach used it was the empirical research with semi-structured interviews based on the clinical method developed by Piaget.
