Resumo: | Introduction: It is known that the mucociliary transport (MCT) is the most important defense mechanism of the respiratory system and continuous exposure to cigarette smoke makes this faulty mechanism. It is already known that aerobic exercise in healthy subjects promotes better mucociliary function. However, this behavior defense mechanism in smokers after exercise is still not very clear in the literature, as well as the behavior of the cardiac autonomic modulation in these individuals. Smoking is related to the development of various diseases, which makes it essential to encourage the effective actions such as the implementation of smoking cessation programs. Objectives: This research aimed to: compare and correlate the acute response of the mucociliary transport and cardiac autonomic modulation of smokers and nonsmokers underwent a submaximal exercise stimulus and maximum and describe a smoking cessation program with new procedures that raise the abstinence success rate. Methods: For the first goal, it assessed 53 subjects, 33 smokers and 20 nonsmokers. All patients underwent assessment of mucociliary transportability through saccharin transit time test (STT) and autonomic function by means of heart rate variability before and after a submaximal exercise stimulus the six-minute walk test and maximal exercise by exhaustive progressive treadmill test (EEPT). For the second goal, described a smoking cessation program with the implementation of new procedures... |
