Avaliação comparativa entre as escolas municipais de ensino básico que receberam e as que não receberam o programa de promoção em saúde bucal da Faculdade de Odontologia de Araçatuba

Resumo: The Brazilian oral health is still characterized by the polarized presence of dental caries and periodontal disease. The tooth extraction and restorative procedures rates are high, especially in children. Faced with this alarming epidemiological situation, oral health promotion activities are emerging in the school environment. The school offers an infrastructure that facilitates the acquisition of new knowledge and the development of healthy habits. The studies evaluating the effectiveness of oral health promotion programs in schools are scarce. Consequently, this study aimed to assess comparatively the efficacy of Oral Health Promotion Program in nursery schools, developed 17 years ago by Araçatuba Dental School and targeted to preschoolers and their parents / carers and teaching staff. Two groups were formed (intervention group and control group). The first one was consisted of five schools that received the oral health promotion program activities and the control group was consisted of five schools that had never received the program activities. Datas were collected by questionnaires and interviews with the three social agents involved in the process (preschoolers, parents / carers and teaching staff). The datas were analyzed using the statistical software Epi Info® 3.5.1 and SPSS® 22.0. The results revealed that preschoolers in intervention group have more knowledge in oral health than children in control group (p < 0.001). However, no significant differences were found between the intervention and control groups of parents / carers and teaching staff. Thus, the greatest knowledge on oral health was significantly associated to oral health promotion program of Araçatuba Dental School, among preschoolers.
