Resumo: | This work presents the main problems related to the implantation of a genetic improvement program of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) based on imported strains to Brazil and a contribution in order to overcome them. An overview is provided on the formation of national lineages, the difficulties brought by this process to genetic improvement, the possibilities offered by molecular genetic to overcome them, the DNA markers assisted selection (MAS), and the use of RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) markers in this process. A series of recommendation of general procedures for the formation of genetic bank and conduction of the MAS program for such species. The two following chapters present contributions of these objectives in a scientific paper form. The first one intends to investigate the genetic potential of four commercial strains proceeding from different stocks in Brazil in order to form an intra-specific hybrid plantel used in a genetic improvement program. The second one investigates the technical viability in the application of two body form indexes as correlated phenotypes to the fillet and carcass yield in a genetic improvement program |
