Condições de saúde bucal das gestantes atendidas na atenção primária do município de Botucatu-SP e seu conhecimento sobre a inportãncia da saúde bucal na gestação

OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the quality of oral health of pregnant women and their knowledge of the potential negative impacts that oral health can have on the mother-fetus binomial. METHODS: it was a cross-sectional and prospective cohort study, in a representative sample of the population of pregnant women who received prenatal care in fifteen units of primary health care in Botucatu - SP. The sample size was calculated by means of simple random sampling, resulting in 142 pregnant women. Patients were evaluated only once, from the 16th week through a questionnaire and physical examination to identify indicators of oral health indices. RESULTS: the number of women who reported being aware of the impact of oral health on pregnancy was very low, and so was the number of women who reported having received guidance on oral health during prenatal care. Oral health indicators showed high gingival bleeding rates, pocket depth of at least 4mm, calculations and caries. CONCLUSION: in the pregnant population analyzed a low level of knowledge about oral health effect on pregnancy was shown, as well as low information rate to pregnant women by health professionals on the importance of maintaining oral health during pregnancy and low quality of the indicators indices of oral health
