Resumo: Today, we live a wild search for mobile internet access and participation in virtual networks. Youth and adults have come to share the same space of the networks where there is no established hierarchy and the flow of information is intense, to and participation is intense, to and participation in these virtual spaces is growing. Today, the school has the task of educating these young people active in social networks to society, however, there is a mismatch between the innovations in the area of technology and the current model of school which we live. From this perspective, the objective of this study was to investigate the contribution that social networks can offer to theaching of biology, especially on topics that require critical thinking, as GMO, Data were collected qualitatively, through the description of the activities that students exercised during the process of discussion of this matter, through 15 high school students from a public shool interviews. The results indicate that the appropriation of social networks as a pedagogical instrument contributes to the developement of critical thinking through controversial issues, and stimulates students' autonomy to manage their own knowledge. We also conclude that social networks help in the process of collective construction of knowledge and contextualization of concepts that are studied in the school's physical space. In this sense, using social networks can be effective to work side issues to the school environment, decentralizes the hierarchical view of the teacher and helped to make the most motivating teaching-learning process to the student, it explores a entertainment tool as formal environment for education
