Resumo: The present study evaluated the contributions of access to the institutional food markets, the Food Acquisition Program (PAA) and the National School Feeding Program (PNAE), in the lives of farm families in the municipality of São José das Palmeiras. In this case study, we sought to analyse how the participants executed the programs, and what was the scope of the objectives proposed by these public policies, in the family agriculture of the municipality. The aim was to evaluate the effects of PAA and PNAE on the life of the 48 farmers families benefited by the purchase of food in the municipality and using indicators of sustainability of agroecosystems define the level of economic and social sustainability of these farmers, the health of their crops and the quality of their agricultural soils. The research was carried out through a case study, using a semi-structured questionnaire and a form for the evaluation of sustainability. In the assessment of the tion of agroecosystems method was used. Three indicator categories were used, the first concerning the economic indicators and the quality of life of the farming families the indicators of crop health and soil quality indicators. The programs have stimulated the food and nutritional sovereignty of family farmers. They stimulate the increase of production in quantity and variety of products and income. The programs have also helped to reveal the value of the countrywoman. Among the future challenges for the programs, bureaucracy and the need for DAP (Declaration of Aptitude to Pronaf) are the main issues. As future possibilities, there is the possibility of existing, organic or agroecological farmers in the municipality. The indicators of sustainability, in general, were above average, which indicates that family farming is moving toward sustainability, sustainability that will not be achieved overnight, but over the years, with multiple efforts. Concerning social sustainability, this was the weakest point. The point of greatest strength was related to the participation of women in management.
