Resumo: This study has as its main object of investigation the Church Matriz São João Batista, located in downtown Foz do Iguaçu, West of Paraná. The main objective of the research is to analyze this temple in its transition process from the historical to the allegorical church, having as a principle the mechanisms of representation linked to memory. For this, observations are made between 1924, the year of its foundation, until 2015, when there were interventions that culminated in the renovation, demolition and reconstruction of the temple with a view to a historical concept. The research is developed around three specific objectives: to analyze the history and historiography of the Parish of São João Batista, through which the evolution of the building in its different construction stages will be observed, as well as the phases of administrative changes of the church , where the figure of some of its clergymen who achieved greater notoriety for their achievements stands out; investigate the changes in the building of the church that occurred between reform, demolition and reconstruction, where the reasons and deliberations that led its leaders to the new design of the temple are investigated, adhering to a historical concept; finally, the analyzes are observed in the light of different theories regarding history, memory and culture. Definitions of the temple are sought through conceptual bases on its allegory and sacredness. The source table for the research is based on the items listed as indicative elements (instructive panels on the history and reform of the temple, texts, documents, photographs or the building itself), and its analyzes are supported by oral testimonies and bibliographic material. , which branch from the main items, providing improved contributions to research. These elements are scrutinized by prescribing them using the indicative method proposed by the Italian historian Carlo Ginzburg, as well as the scale of the observation cut that is carried out through the theoretical paradigm of microhistory. The approach results in a better understanding of the temple modification process through photographic and textual analyzes, demonstrating that the allegory of the building is configured as an attempt to connect what the church currently represents while bringing with it the values of its time. Finally, the approach also contemplates the positioning of the church in the characteristic multicultural environment of Foz do Iguaçu to understand how representative elements of history or cultural identity tend to become tourist attractions in this spatiality. Research points to an effort to monumentalize the temple by its clerics by molding representations around it.
