Resumo: This work describes an approach to analyze organizational communication networks through the use of a computing tool. This tool models the communication as a graph, where people are represented as nodes and information flows are represented as edges. This creates a map of the organization collaboration network, which can be mathematically analyzed. The tool implements Social Network Analysis (SNA) algorithms and allows the visual exploration of the modeled graph. Compared to other SNA products, the developed tool incorporates greater semantic capability through the dynamic definition of the attributes associated with the objects under study, i.e. people and communication flows. The tool also simplifies the exploration of the modeled networks and the results obtained by the SNA algorithms through the use of visual data mining techniques. The built graphs can be interactively explored and the mapping between their visual attributes and the attributes of the modeled objects can be dynamically changed. Visual attributes, colors in particular, can also be used to represent the values of the metrics computed by the SNA algorithms. This enables users to visually interpret relationships and roles over the modeled network. The developed tool was applied in a case study aimed at analyzing the communication network associated with a Help Desk in a medium sized organization. The study indicated that the tool facilitates identification of communities of practice, communication patterns, and key individuals over the modeled network.
