Resumo: |
Introduction: Telemedicine is defined as the use of electronic information and telecommunication technologies to maintain and promote health care. Currently, this modality of care has been used as a strategy for teaching and training medical skills. Thus, knowing the motivation and empathy manifested by students, both in telemedicine and during in person consultations, is important for planning curricula and learning strategies in medical courses. Objective: To evaluate the motivation and empathy manifested by medical studentsduring in person consultations and teleconsultations. Materials and methods: 8th period students (n=63), from UNI-BH Medical School, allocated by the course to teleconsultations (n=28) and to in person consultations (n=35), were selected by convenience to participate in the study. Motivation was evaluated by conducting the Brazilian version of the Instructional Materials Motivation Survey (IMMS-BRV), in the thirteenth week of care. To assess the empathic behavior throughout the semester, the Jefferson scale (JSPE-vs) was used, applied in the third week and then in the thirteenth week of care. Results: Motivation was high in both groups in all dimensions and in the overall motivation of the IMMS-BRV (mean scores 4,4/5,0 – 88% of the possible total).Female students had higher mean scores with large effect size on the empathy dimension "compassionate caring" and male students had higher mean scores with moderate effect size on the empathy dimension "ability to put oneself in the place of the patient".When analyzing the results of the global empathy score, it was observed that before the prolonged exposure to IPC (in person consultation) and TC (teleconsultation) at the beginning of the study (third week), the groups were equal. However, after such exposure (thirteenth week), the IPC group showed significantly higher results than the TC group, with a large effect size (Cohen's D = 0.86).A similar fact occurred in the Perspective Taking dimension. There were several positive correlations between motivation and empathy, especially in the IPC group. Conclusion: The set of evidences allow us to state that, within the scope of this research, in person consultations were associated with greater development of empathy, that both forms of care were motivating, and that increased motivation is associated with increased empathy in clinical care. |
