Resumo: The research assumes that bands modify their musical practices as far as the social context in which they are inserted is transformed by the changes and reinventions of their values, their beliefs, their way of listening and interacting with music and its musical aesthetic experience. This way, the music band can be seen as a complex institution, where individual and collective actions and ideologies interact internally within the institution itself to build musical practices and form a collective identity. In 1951 was created in Uberlândia, the Municipal band of the city. In its story, the “¬Banda Municipal de Uberlândia” underwent through great changes both internal and external (society) what interfered in its musical practice. Especially between the decades of 1980 and 1990, there was an attempt to transform what was characterized as civil band to which was considered to be a symphonic band. This research sought to understand the transformations in the musical practice of the “Banda Municipal de Uberlândia” between the 1950s and 1990s with documents analyzes and interviews with musicians that were part of the history of the Band, which showed that the Banda Municipal de Uberlândia despite having modified its practices intending to acquire symphonic band status, failed to consolidate in this category, but became a band with a more eclectic and modern repertoire, leaving behind part of the tradition of military band that prevailed between the decades of 1950 and 1970.
