This thesis analyzes the point of view of Machado de Assis (1839-1908) about the role and social function of the writer in 19th century Brazil. Such discussions are present in his texts published in newspapers and magazines, and comprising the following essays: The Past, Present and Future of Literature (1858), The Ideal of the Critic (1865), Current News of Brazilian Literature: Instinct of nationality (1873) and The New Generation (1879). These sketches seek to debate the meaning and literary making at a time when Brazilian literature was being conducted into the political culture project of the monarchical state (1858-1879). Thus, this paper aims to question the extent to which Machado de Assis, through his conceptual formulation of literary criticism, understood and debated the meaning of Brazilian literature, society and political culture of the eight hundred.
