Resumo: This research aimed to analyze how the elderly administrative technical staff of the Hospital de Clínicas of the Federal University of Uberlândia perceive the labor relations, the proximity of retirement and the orientations at national and institutional level on the elderly. The adopted methodology was a qualitative approach, the adopted methodological procedure is classified as a case study, and the sources of evidence used were the documents, in this case, the federal legislation on the elderly and the internal norms of the University, observation direct, non-participant and the individual interviews with 18 elderly administrative technicians of the institution's Hospital de Clínicas. The data were analyzed through the technique of content analysis proposed by Bardin (2016). The main results indicate that older workers consider themselves to have a good relationship with their bosses and colleagues, and that besides presenting themselves as victims of age discrimination, they also have discriminatory attitudes towards younger workers. Regarding the institutional policies that deal with the elderly, the University demonstrates that it does not have a consolidated program for this public. Interviewees know the federal legislation only that deals with the rights and priorities of the elderly. The main aspects that encourage the permanence in the work when already fulfilled the requirements for retirement are the satisfaction with the work, the fear of the idea of uselessness caused by the loss of the professional role, the need to remain productive and the possible financial losses due to the retirement.
