Resumo: The works found in recent literature relating to the school psychologist's performance have been predominantly focused on the ambit of public teaching. Thus, this study investigates this professional's practice in the private teaching network, based on qualitative assumptions, within a historical-cultural perspective. We carried out semi-structured interviews with twelve school psychologists of the private teaching network from the city of Uberlândia / MG and we found that the insertion of these psychologists in the private educational segment reflects, among other factors, historical issues related to the constitution of School Psychology in Brazil, which are unfolded in the school psychologist's social image. The work modes developed by the professionals of this study are predominantly traditional, sustained by a formation which reveals a tendency to theoretical eclecticism and difficulties in the appropriation of more recent scientific progresses in the area. The study points to the need of a greater investment on the part of training institutions and of the professionals working in the area to enlarge the field of performance
