Resumo: Introduction: Primary Health Care units are important generators of waste from health services and inadequate management can increase risks to the health of the population as well as to the environment. Objectives: To know the management of solid health waste in basic family health units in Araguari-MG and through the data, obtain a diagnosis of the local situation when compared with current legislation; check how the final disposal of waste generated takes place and prepare a guide to good practices on the subject. Methodology: This is an exploratory, descriptive and observational study, with quantitative and qualitative analysis. Data collection occurred through the application of a questionnaire with those responsible for the health units and direct observation of the work environment. Subsequently, the municipal waste management plan was analyzed, in order to verify how the final disposal of generated waste occurs. CONAMA, ABNT and ANVISA resolutions were also consulted to support the preparation of the good practices guide. Results: The research was carried out in 13 basic family health units in Araguari-MG. Participants reported difficulties in preparing and/or monitoring the waste management plan for health services. Nonconformities were detected in the different stages of the process, in all establishments surveyed. It is also noteworthy that some of them do not have adequate physical structure. An educational instrument “Guide to Good Practices in the Management of Health Waste in Primary Care” was created to guide the daily practice of professionals. Final considerations: It is noted that continuous investment in permanent education actions and effective action by municipal management and health authorities is essential to improve the current scenario.
