Resumo: Ariano Suassuna is one of the great names of Brazilian Literature and, therefore, this study proposes an analysis of his work A Pena e a Lei, starting from an inter and intratextual perspective, as it observes the dialogues with works of other authors of different times and with the own works of the author from Paraíba. The main subject of this research is the postmortem event present in the corpus. With this in view, we intend to discuss the author's view on post-mortem and how his aesthetic project is influenced. It is worth to comment on the figures of the Catholic imaginary present in the work, especially the female figures, since they are of great importance to understand the intentions of the author. Salvation, redemption and judgment will be the main topics during the research, since they are configured as vectors that point to our main objective: the ethic of Ariano Suassuna. In general, we will point out other elements present in the work, such as the picaresque, which, although not the focus of the study, it is elementary in the discussion, since the aesthetics of Suassuna bring traces of this aspect. Suassuna, with his critical and questioning spirit, has a very peculiar ethics that we intend to investigate in the course of our research.
