Resumo: This study aimed to evaluate quantitatively the relative mandible head/ mandible fossa of 80 (80) volunteers, individuals selected among the patients of the Hospital Dentistry College of dentistry at the Federal University of Uberlândia (FOUFU) and divided equally into two groups. The first group was composed of 40 young individuals, with age ranging from 18 to 25 years old, both sexes (27 ♀ and ♂ 13), subdivided in equally, as the absence or the presence of symptoms of TMD. The second group consisted of 40 adult patients, with age ranging from 35 to 50 years of both sexes (30 ♀ and ♂ 10), also divided equally, considering the existence of symptoms of TMD according to the instrument of diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders research-RDC/TMD. Each participant underwent two CT scans, one M.I e and another in RC, through cone beam computed tomography (CONE). Measurements of joint space were held in coronal and sagittal cuts of the temporomandibular joints, and the collected data were statistically analyzed through Mann-Whitney U test to the 5% level of significance. Differences between the jaw positions of C.R and MI, were found, but very small, without statistical significance in intragupos analysis in both youth and adults individuals. The analysis already intergroups (C.R or M.I x asymptomatic and symptomatic), in a measure, noted differences however, statistics with a value very close to the significance level of 0.05. Correlations between youth and adults, also under review intergroups, taking into consideration the age factor (symptomatic, asymptomatic, C.R and M.I x young or adults), showed significant statistical differences in all analyses. Concludes in our results, the relative mandible head/ mandible fossa in young or adult stage, does not seem to be influenced neither by C.R positions and MI, not by the presence or absence of symptoms of TMD. And the age factor, showed a decisive in discrepancies between C.R and M.I, proving that with the passing of the age, significant changes occur in the structures of the ATMs.
