Jean-Baptiste Debret (1768-1848) is frequently described by both historians and art critics as a historical painter from the “French Artistic Mission”. However, this dissertation seeks to portray Debret not only as a painter of historical themes but also as an artist who followed his own artistic project by developing an iconography that brought fauna, flora and ethnographic themes to his Voyage Pittoresque. As such, it seeks to describe him as a naturalist-like travel painter. To this end, it takes a specific approach to Brazil’s artistic history, one which above all focuses on reporting an artist who dedicated a vast iconography to the early 19th-century Brazil.
