Resumo: | The objective of this dissertation is to analyze the urban impacts arising from implementing Bust Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors in medium-sized cities, focusing on the city of Uberaba-MG. Located in the Triângulo Mineiro, the city is considered the first in Brazil with less than 500,000 inhabitants to implement the BRT system. These corridors consist of the design of exclusive lanes for buses on higher density lines, to have an increase in scale and speed in public transport. This modality has been used successfully in several cities, especially Medellin, in Colombia. The adoption of this system has been propagated by supposedly promoting the improvement of public transport, with gains in scale and speed of travel in the urban environment. Despite the benefits, it is observed, however, that implementing the BRT system brought some important negative impacts since it uses a combustion vehicle, which requires a robust road structure. Also, noteworthy is the section of the urban fabric and the reordering of flows through its channel, changes in land use and the urban landscape, interference in an already established dynamic, increased atmospheric and environmental pollution, in addition to decreased local pedestrian mobility. The present work was developed through qualitative and quantitative analyzes, investigating recent research in urban mobility and the BRT system, and through field research, carried out with the main stakeholders: users of BRT on Av. Leopoldino de Oliveira, and individuals belonging to the tertiary and real estate sector. The result of the study reveals that the BRT model inserted in the city brought unintended consequences, such as the increase of vacancy levels, the closing of several shops, and the impact on the income, in addition to not yet providing significant improvement in the distance and time of users' trips. The results expect to contribute to the formulation of more sustainable public transport projects and policies in many aspects. |
