Resumo: This paper investigates the role of professional qualification of psychologists, physiotherapists and psychiatrists in shaping the NASF team in the city of São Paulo. The Support Team for Family Health (NASF) is a response to the need for support from Family Health Strategy (ESF) teams on dealing with complex problems faced in community based health care. This service aims to expand primary health care teams’ performance, improving comprehensiveness based practices. Professional qualification is one important approach of health policies for the Unique Health System (SUS), in order to guide the programs towards setting the principles for community based health care. The process of professional qualification implicate both college education and inservice training, also considering the work places as learning fields, according to the concepts of the Permanent Health Education Policy (EPS). The EPS aims to reinforce welfare models and favors the framing of the new strategies, programs and policies of SUS by focusing on professional competences and the institucional culture setting. As a relatively new policy in the SUS, the evaluation of NASF teams are relevant, an in this paper it is considered trought the professional qualification view. The method chosen for this research is the case study, with qualitative interviews as data collect technique, with the city of São Paulo as research setting. The data points to an insufficient provision of theory base and disciplines related to public helath, SUS, NASF and ESF on college education, as well as the few internships opportunities on this field. In service training programs appears to be relevant for the NASF, but also considered insufficient for setting the program. The study highlights the great variability of understanding about the NASF role in the health care system, pointing out the limits and potentials of this team. The study still shows the need to consider professional qualification programs as a step for enplace new health policies, including reviews on college degrees curriculum and the development of relevant inservice training programs, based on the concepts of Permanente Education Health Policy.
