Resumo: On the analysis of personal identity through Edith Stein and Hedwig Conrad-Martius’ perspectives it is possible to identify the idea that to the singular essence of the human being is necessarily inherent not only an indeterminacy level as though the possibility of modification of its own essence due to the self-formation ability of the individual. By confronting the investigations carried out by those two phenomenologists, especially those concerning the questions of the being and the notion of essence, the consideration of the case will seek to clarify whether and how that idea is justified, since it seems to introduce a contradiction in the notion of essence itself, which would imply a fundamental character of immutability. The thesis to be defended is that, in the case of the human individual, thanks to its spiritual capacity – in particular, the freedom and the particularity of the self to transcend itself and reach its sense –, it is possible to admit the mutability of the singular essence, without loss of personal identity, by considering that its being is established precisely in the tension of two dimensions concerning the time: the transient and the eternal.
