Resumo: | Objective: analyze the anatomy and histology of the septomarginal trabecula of bovine and swine hearts, identifying possible macro and microscopic variations. Methods: septomarginal trabeculae from 34 bovine hearts and 12 swine hearts were analyzed for their macroscopic morphology and, after being fixed in Bouin's solution, processed, sectioned in microtome (5 μm) and stained, were analyzed histologically. Results: in all hearts evaluated, the septomarginal trabecula presented as a smooth tubular structure, of fibromuscular consistency, with variable length and diameter. The anatomical variations observed included trabeculae with more than one marginal fixation, of two to four branches, and unique septal fixation, besides several sizes in their caliber. Histologically, these structures were constituted by cardiac muscle fibers, connective tissue, vascular tissue and myofibril conduction, the Purkinje fibers. In the samples of bovine and swine septomarginal trabeculae, which presented a smaller diameter, connective tissue predominated, and cardiac muscle tissue was scarcer, whereas in the thicker samples, predominance was of cardiac striated muscle tissue. These findings were corroborated by the stereological analyzes. Conclusions: there are significant macro and microscopic differences between the septomarginal trabeculae as regards their diameter and constituent tissue and may lead to possible changes in cardiac physiology. |
