Resumo: This dissertation aims to contribute to the question of differentiation (Brah, 2006), based on the analysis of some elements that marks the hierarchization of the relations between the Fulas of Gabu. Starting from the conception that ethnicity is a colonial ideological creation, I intend to demonstrate how those who call themselves Fulas relate to each other, as well the differences that mark their several segments. The idea of ethnicity remained in the imagination of local societies, even after the colonial period, and during the war of independence of Guinea-Bissau the concept of ethnicity was instrumentalized with political purposes, leading the Fulas to be represented in a stereotyped way towards other peoples. In addition to the description of the ethnography carried out in the city of Pitche, in the region of Gabu, eastern Guinea-Bissau, I will present data from the anthropological literature about the Fulas from other regions of the African continent to help in understand some elements that permeate the social organization of the Fulas of Gabu. Thus, I will try to demonstrate how elements considered to form a “fulanity” such as the Islamic religion, language or the code of moral conduct of this group vary according to the historical period or the location where the research was carried out.
