Resumo: This research’s purpose is to analyse how the spiritism was seen on the Society of the turning centuries, from XIX to XX, by different groups. In a context of ideas about the modernization of the new brazilian republic, how was seen the spiritist doctrine? If on the one hand it could be understood related to the progress, as a religious manifestation born in France, formulated by a french pedagogue and had some well-reputed scientists’ support, on the otter it could be associated to the backwardness, once the mediumship were seen by the medicine, in some moments, as a pathology or against the christian Faith. The disputes between representatives of the spiritism, the medicine and the catolicism are the center of this research. The opinions about the spitist doctrine, wich appear at the medical journals and the christian newspapers are the main source for study this theme. The spiritis movement’s answers are also object for analysis, as well as the debate at main press. This investigation aims to build a general view os the brazilian thinking about spiritism on this context.
