The purpose of this work is to analyze the female condition and subjugation of women in the novel Gabriela Cravo e Canela: crônica de uma cidade do interior (Gabriela, clove and cinnamon), from the study of the protagonist Gabriela and the characters: Sinhazinha, Malvina, Glória and, as well as the implications of marriage and political, social and economic values in the lives of the characters in the novel. We also want to find out to what extent the work favors the folkloric aspect of the situations, minimizing the social question, as some critics point out. The intention, therefore, is that this project will contribute to the studies of this novel and to the debate about women in our society.
