Resumo: Introduction: Breast cancer and its treatment cause physical, social and emotional changes, thus affecting the quality of life, and it may be associated with loss of capacity and productivity at work. Objective: To assess the ability to work and productivity in women after treatment for breast cancer. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of 152 selected women, 30 to 60 years of age, from the outpatient care of Plastic Surgery and Mastology of São Paulo Hospital and Pérola Byington Hospital, with similar distribution in age and education, 38 with no history of breast cancer and 114 who underwent surgical treatment of breast cancer, at least, one year ago. We utilized two validated instruments for use in Brazil, Work Productivity and Activity Impairment - General Health Questionnaire (WPAI-GH) and the Work Limitations Questionnaire (WLQ). Results: The groups were homogeneous regarding the main demographic data. The Conservative and Mastectomy groups showed reduced capacity to work (p = 0.0004), reduced productivity (p = 0.0006) and Mastectomy group also had daily activities reduction (p = 0.0121). Conclusion: Women who underwent breast-conserving surgery and mastectomy have decreased ability to work and productivity.
