Resumo: The preservation of autonomy and independence in the daily living activities of elderly people bring a very pertinent relation to socioeconomic and demographic health-related factors. Objective: To identify and analyze the associated with the functional loss in older adults living in the urban area of Maceió, Alagoas. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with a population sample of 319 elderly participants, 210 of them females (65.8%). Their average age was 72 (SD = + 8.83) with a minimum of 60 and a maximum of 105. To obtain the functional routine data the Functional Operating Older American Resources and Services Multidimensional Functional Assessment Questionnaire (BOMFAQ) were used. A descriptive analysis, the chi-square test and a regression analysis for crude prevalence ratio were used, and the significance level was p <0.05. Results: Prevalence commitment varied from moderate to severe (mod/severe) and was 45.5%. The factors associated with this commitment (mod/severe) were being 75 years old or older, having up to four years of schooling, reporting two or more chronic diseases and being single. Conclusions: The conditions of the elderly here described, its inequalities and their potential impacts on health services may suggest the organization of a comprehensive health care for the elderly which is now an emerging priority in the state capital of Alagoas.
