Resumo: Virtual Institutional Repositories (IR) are platforms which act as a digital library. They are used for storage, preservation and communication of knowledge produced by educational and research institutions, contributing to the development of science. From the Open Access perspective, this work presents as a final product the proposal of policies for an IR to a Campus of an institution of the Federal Network of Professional, Scientific and Technological Education located in Rio Grande do Sul, with the objective of preserving and providing access to the research conducted in the institutions’ activities of teaching, research and extension. This is a qualitative research, using the case study method, what allowed a deeper study of the collected data. The data collection techniques which composed the case study were bibliographic research, documentary research and interview, through which it was possible to gather a wide range of information that helped to achieve the research objectives. At the end of the policy’s elaboration, it was evaluated by the institution’s servants using the SCALE model and changes were made based on the results obtained in the evaluation questionnaires. In the product evaluation it was possible to determine the Campus scientific community is open and optimistic about the tool, viewing several positive points in the artifact and evaluating the initiative well. It is intended the institution appropriates the product of this work, offering a service which will benefit the community of the institution – students and servants. The research is linked to the research line Development of Networked Educational Technologies, belonging to the Professional Master in Networked Educational Technologies of the Federal University of Santa Maria.
