In this dissertation, I investigate the Fantastic tradition in literature from Rio Grande do Sul, a state in the Southern region of Brazil. In order to develop the research, I analyzed narratives from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. Besides this introduction and the findings chapter, I divided this text in five parts. In chapter two, I presented a theoretical framework of both the Fantastic literature and the writing of literary history. In the third chapter, I selected three short stories from Revista Mensal da Sociedade Partenon Literário (1869-1879), an important 19th -century periodical from Rio Grande do Sul. In the fourth chapter, I adressed the rural short stories of Alcydes Maia, João Simões Lopes Neto e Darcy Azambuja. In the fifth chapter, I analyzed two novels, written by Erico Verissimo and Moacyr Scliar, and also a short story book written by Josué Guimarães. Finally, in the sixth chapter I discussed the Fantastic boom in the 21st century in Brazil. By the end, I argued in favor of the existence of a Fantastic tradition in the literature from Rio Grande do Sul.
