Resumo: As information registered in a support, photography constitutes a document, and its archival condition relates to its genesis in the course of the functions and activities of natural and legal persons. In personal archives, there is an expressive volume of photographs, which may include a number of items as assets or inheritance that remain stored for many years after the death of their producers. There are people who deliver documents that belonged to ancestors to relatives who might be more interested in them, or to custody institutions. In the second case, there is an attempt to preserve family history and contribute with the collective memory; however, the action resulting from the family will impacts the integrity of these items of archival nature, leading to dispersion or fragmentation. It should be noted that the scope of action by the institution that preserves historical documentation influences how photographs are acquired, organized, and represented for research. In this context, Luiz Germano Gieseler’s (1870-1954) photography archive is under the custody of Anthropological Museum Diretor Pestana (MADP), in Ijuí, State of Rio Grande do Sul. MADP is an institution maintained by the Foundation of Integration, Development and Education of Northwestern State of Rio Grande do Sul (FIDENE). The study approaches the historical and documentary value of photography as cultural heritage, in order to highlight the importance of its production, maintenance, and custody, as a method that aims reliability in its diffusion. It is proposed an organization methodology according to the identification of the nature of the collection, research object, and its description for access, from the archival perspective. Finding aids with internet access were elaborated as the final product of the investigation, including Guide, Inventory, and Catalog (partial), through AtoM web platform. It was possible to relate the identification of the nature of a photography archive and the definition of its organization and representation, concluding that the archive from a natural person constituted only by photographs, disconnected from other documentary genres, and without the possibility of reconstitution of the original order, does not have an archival character. However, the photography archive created by photographers is considered of archival nature, with the reservation that, even if its context is recovered, it cannot be characterized as a “fond”, for not constituting the totality of a personal archive. As a result from the actions taken in the maintenance of the photography archive, the identification of the documentary series that structure the arrangement might be compromised, besides requiring the representation of the conceptual fund, its custody history, and other circumstances. Finally, the archival analysis by typology and diplomatics is presented as viable methodology of organization of the accumulated documentary mass, as a subsidy of photography decoding, where the application of the photographic genre or its specialties is presented as a pertinent alternative, because it allows for the functional condition, not only thematic, of the document.
